The Thought Processor

It’s shocking how many thoughts our minds have in a day. This is estimated to be around 8,000 thoughts in a day. Others even estimate it more at 60,000! Just imagine!! I mean the mind has to be the most powerful above all machines ever made! (that is according to me by the way). It’s so hard to fathom how this is even possible for a single organ of the body in a day.

If you asked me to write down all the thoughts I had today, trust me it can’t get to that number. Ever. It’s so fascinating how we are not even aware of when this process is going on. We just live life one day after another, Oh! I mean one thought after another. I’m I the only one fascinated by this? It’s a lot.

When I was a child, I used to have a lot of questions like how come the heart never gets tired? Or how do my eyelids know when to blink? Or how does the mind hold all of that information throughout a person’s life without forgetting? Or who is this guy curiosity who killed the cat? et cetera (the last one though🤣). Some of these may have been answered in the course of my life so far and some not yet.

What always stayed in my mind was of course the mind itself and how critical it is for life. Whether you are standing, eating, crying, fighting, talking, or shouting at your cat, this process is still on. Some have called it mental noise.

This brought me back to mindfulness. The state of being present. This makes more sense now because if this amount of thoughts passes through my mind every day then I need to be more conscious. Conscious of what I am doing and thinking at this moment and whether it is of significance. No wonder it has been said your mind can make you miserable. Of which it’s not it, it’s our lack of consciousness. Being aware of the value some of our thoughts have and if they are worth the weight we give them.

The mind just like the heart never stops. That’s why getting our thoughts out is essential. Talking is one of the best ways to get your thoughts out instead of locking them up and letting them eat up your peace of mind. I have found writing another better avenue for this. Whether it’s journaling or an article, writing helps focus your mind on a particular thought for a moment and slow down this ongoing stream of thoughts. Others may include meditation and so on.

Before I caught a feeling I caught a thought,- Steven Furtick

Although I may not be an expert in life, I do know that you are not your thoughts. You are not what you think and you do not have to believe everything you think. My thoughts don’t define me, so if I find myself in a circle of negative thinking that doesn’t make me a negative person. I just have to take a deep breath, ease up my mind, and have a moment of gratitude.
